Back in June of 2023, as the days were getting longer and the nights even shorter, two perpetually single individuals had no idea the summer solstice would soon hold so much significance in their lives. The solstice is often seen as a time for new beginnings, both physically and spiritually, as it marks a transition into a new season and a fresh start for personal growth.
It all began with a fateful “like” on the dating app Hinge, sparking weeks of text and phone conversations. Through shared experiences, values, and dreams, both sensed the possibility of a deep, meaningful connection. (Disclaimer: Luke insists everyone knows there’s no evidence of these early conversations because Meredith deleted Hinge and all of their initial exchanges - and he never lets her forget it.) Fueled by hope and curiosity, they planned their first date. But that date, one that would change both of their lives, almost never happened.
Just a week before they were set to meet, Meredith faced the devastating losses of her beloved dog, Sugar, and her aunt (F— Cancer). During a quiet text exchange, Meredith opened up about how difficult life had been lately. She debated canceling the date, tempted to spend the night on her couch with a glass of wine and a true crime documentary. But then Luke replied with exactly what she needed to hear: “Oh my God, I am so sorry. My heart hurts for you.” At that moment, Meredith decided this guy might be worth a shot.
A few days later, on the first official day of summer, they met for dinner at Sixty Vines in The Woodlands. His excited energy didn’t go unnoticed—within minutes, a kind lesbian couple at the bar smiled knowingly and asked, “First date, huh?” . Moments later, Meredith arrived fashionably late, spotted Luke and his new friends, and instantly felt at ease.
From the start, their conversation flowed effortlessly. The chemistry was undeniable. As if to set the stage for something unforgettable, a massive Texas storm rolled in, with booming thunder and flashes of lightning attempting to interrupt their conversation. Just as their dinner was served, a lightning strike knocked out power to the entire restaurant. Amid the chaos of emergency sirens and a darkened dining room, Meredith and Luke locked eyes and, without hesitation, chose to ignore the mayhem. They stayed, savoring their meal and each other’s company.
With no way to order more drinks at Sixty Vines, they dashed across the street to another bar, braving a torrential downpour. As they ran through the rain, Luke reached for Meredith’s hand—and in that simple gesture, left a lasting impression on her heart. By the end of the night, both knew this date was unlike any other.
The storm had wreaked havoc and most of the area lost power. The next day, Meredith was comfortably enjoying her air conditioning while Luke suffered in the sweltering heat. Seizing the opportunity (and secretly wanting some canine companionship), Meredith invited Luke over - seemingly so he could cool off, but really to spend time with his dog, Chuck, at her now dog-less home. Upon meeting, Chuck adored Meredith and Meredith adored Chuck. What she didn’t realize then was that Chuck would fill the pit bull-sized hole left in her heart.
The three quickly became inseparable, their bond deepening each day. Although neither can recall the exact moment, one day Meredith told Luke she loved him, and without hesitation, he said it back. Plans for the future soon followed. That fall, they bought a home together as a place to build their life and where Meredith could lovingly bombard Luke with DIY projects for years to come.
Fast forward to August 2024: Luke knew he had found the one he had been waiting for his entire life. He began planning the perfect proposal - something meaningful and heartfelt. October 3rd seemed ideal, nestled between their birthdays and unlikely to raise suspicion. But, as life so often does, things didn’t go according to plan.
On Luke’s birthday, Chuck—the dog who had helped bring them together—passed away. It was heartbreaking. Yet in the midst of sorrow, Chuck gave Luke one final gift: Meredith would never suspect what was coming.
Emerging from their grief, Luke asked Meredith to join him for dinner to celebrate everything—their birthdays, their love, and Chuck’s incredible life. On the way, Luke made a “wrong turn” that led them to a rose garden in East Shore—the very place where they had first fallen in love. With a sly smile, Luke turned to her and said, “Wow, we have so many beautiful memories here. Would you like to make a new one?” Meredith, puzzled, replied, “Umm... OK, sure.”
They stepped into the garden where a man was softly strumming their song, “Only You”, on an acoustic guitar. After a quick display of Luke’s signature dance moves, he took Meredith’s hand, looked into her eyes, and said he had three things to share.
With love and emotion in his voice, Luke began:
“Inside and out, you are the most beautiful person I have ever met.
Your love has made me a better man than I ever thought I could be.”
Then came the words he’ll never forget:
“I’m sure of almost nothing in life, but the one thing I’m sure of is that I want to spend every single day of the rest of my life with you.”
Tears welled up in his eyes, and with a heart full of love, Luke got down on one knee and asked, “Will you marry me?”
Overcome with emotion, shock, and joy, Meredith replied, “Absolutely, YES!”
As their song continued to play, Luke slipped the ring on her finger and in that moment, Meredith and Luke forever became us.
We’re so excited to continue our story with so many of our friends and family as we enter the next chapter of life: marriage.
All we ask of you is to come with love in your hearts and be ready to dance the night away!
